THE XR6 VCT Pursuit ute, by virtue of its name, is equipped with the Variable Cam Timing version of Ford's 4.0-litre, Intech, chain-driven, SOHC six-cylinder engine. The VCT system adjusts camshaft timing in tune with the dual phase inlet manifold for greater torque at both low and high engine speeds, and helps push the standard engine's 157kW/357Nm power/torque outputs to 172kW at 5000rpm and 374Nm at 3150rpm. A tuned, sports exhaust system is also part of the package. Previously, there was also another version of the in-line six available called the HP or High Performance unit, which produced 164kW of power and 366Nm of torque. This engine was found under the bonnet of the regular XR6 ute while the VCT was exclusive to the limited edition XR6 Pursuit ute tested here. Now the VCT engine is the only variant available in XR6 ute, while the HP engine remains available in the sedan model. All XRs have a limited slip differential as standard.
