THE Ford F250 XLT is available with a 4R100 four-speed automatic transmission only. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on all XL-model F250s, excluding the crew-cab as it is only available in XLT format. The automatic has a tow-haul feature that means the transmission computer module continuously monitors sensors located in the engine and adjusts powertrain parameters to deliver smooth, predictable power. A standard auxiliary cooler for heavy-duty use helps prevent the coolant thinning and overheating. Kick-down and up-change are smooth, considering the weight of the vehicle and the high torque characteristics of the engine. A centre coupling fitted to the tailshaft reduces the torque effect on the shaft, removing the shudder that can be noticeable in extra-long wheelbase vehicles. This coupling should also aid in extending the bearing life of the differential and the transmission. The column shift transmission selector arm is mounted on the right-hand side of the steering column and provides manual selection of lower gears on the move while an overdrive "off" button on the stalk allows lockout of overdrive fourth gear for pulling loads or engine braking on downgrades. At 80km/h with overdrive selected the engine revs at 1500rpm, with the overdrive off the engine revs at 2200rpm. Limited-slip differentials are standard on both XL and XLT F250 models.
