AUTOMATIC versions of the Explorer are powered by a German-made, alloy-headed, single overhead camshaft, 4.0-litre V6 engine. The engine produces 153kW at 5000rpm and 339Nm of torque at 3000rpm. More than 90 per cent of the engine's torque is available between 1500rpm and 5400rpm. Manual-only XL gets an older, less powerful overhead valve, 4.0-litre engine. The older powerplant develops 119kW at 4200rpm and 305Nm of torque at 2800rpm.
