NISSAN NAVARA DUAL CAB P/UP (1986-1997)
THE Nissan Navara has the smallest capacity engine of this group, a 2.4-litre four, but the most power (91kW) due to its more efficient electronic fuel-injection. The Navara, along with the rest of these rivals, uses torsion bar suspension at the front and leaf springs at the rear.

TOYOTA HILUX DUAL CAB P/UP (1988-1997)
THE HiLux has always been one of the most popular 4WD utes. The four-cylinder, 2.4-litre, carburetted engine has an output of 75kW. Standard equipment includes power steering from 1990 and a limited-slip differential from 1992.

MITSUBISHI TRITON DOUBLE CAB UTILITY (1990-1996)
THE Triton is the king here when it comes to load capacity. It can haul over 1200kg of people and cargo. The single overhead cam, four-cylinder engine produces 79kW from 2.6 litres. A limited slip differential and power steering are standard.

HOLDEN RODEO CREW CAB P/UP (1990-1995)
THE Rodeo has become as popular as the Hi Lux. In part, this is because it has the best combination of load carrying ability and engine power, almost 1200kg and 88kW from the four-cylinder, 2.6- litre, fuel-injected engine.
