WE hope you like the look of the retro Fiat 500, because we’re pretty certain there are about to be a whole lot more of them on the roads than we’re accustomed to seeing.

That’s because Fiat’s recently appointed Australian factory importer just cut the starting price to $14,000 drive-away, giving prospective Volkswagen Up and Nissan Micra buyers some pause for thought.

Granted, they’ve taken some gear out, and the fabulously rorty TwinAir two-cylinder turbo engine in the more expensive versions makes way for a conventional, less inspiring four-cylinder, but it’s hard to argue with the value equation.

Bottom line, this car may date back in essence to 2007, but like most things Italian it hasn’t gone out of style – but does it have the substance to back up the style?

In this quick test, we review the aforementioned base variant – called Pop – but also the rest of the revised line-up, including the warmed-up Sport, TwinAir Lounge and fashion-conscious Gucci.
