ELFIN has introduced a new-age four-cylinder model that is bound to re-energize the clubman scene in Australia. The Braeside compmany is already producing lightweight models powered by a mighty V8 engine, but has decided to make a better behaved model. While it is for sale in Australia, the new Type 5 is predominantly aimed at England, where this kind of car is much more popular. The Type 5 runs a turbo-boosted four-cylinder from General Motors that produces 194kW and 351Nm of torque, which doesn't sound overwhelming for a sportscar, but is in fact more than enough when you consider the Type 5 only weighs 780kg. The new Elfin runs a lot of components from the VE Commodore such as the axles, rear differential and steering rack. What's more, it can be road-registered and prices start at $64,950 - although a long options list can push the price up considerably.
