Dodge slims range for upgraded Caliber

BY MARTON PETTENDY | 8th Jul 2010

CHRYSLER Australia has released an upgraded 2010 Dodge Caliber featuring an all-new interior and a $1000-lower pricetag for the volume-selling 2.0-litre SXT automatic variant, which now costs $29,990 plus on-road costs.

However, the SXT auto is now the sole variant in the slow-selling American small-car range following the axing of all other variants, including the entry-level SX 1.8-litre petrol manual (formerly $23,990) and SX 2.0-litre petrol auto ($26,990), and the range-topping SXT 2.0 CRD diesel ($32,490).

Chrysler Australia says it used the opportunity of a global interior upgrade to rationalise its edgy five-door hatchback range - sales of which were 50 per cent down in the first half of this year – by reintroducing only the single most popular variant with new interior features at a lower price.

Combined in the 2010 SXT with standard 18-inch polished alloy wheels, front head restraints and a continuously variable automatic (CVT) transmission, the redesigned Caliber cabin features a new dashboard with centre storage compartment, a split-level storage bin beneath the lidded centre armrest and soft-touch door trims.

The fresh dash comprises a new instrument panel with “smooth design aesthetic”, while chromed accents adorn the new climate controls, gearshift gate and instrument cluster dials.

The SXT’s 2.0-litre DOHC VVT four-cylinder petrol engine continues to produce 115kW and 190Nm of torque and to return average fuel consumption of 8.0L/100km.

Dodge’s sole Caliber comes standard with the ‘Chill Zone’ cold-drink storage bin and rechargeable LED torch, plus the Boston Acoustics MusicGate Power sound system including two articulating speakers that swing down from the rear hatch.

The latter is included in the $2750 ‘Technology Group’ option, which also includes an AM/FM/CD/DVD/HD player, while further options include a power sunroof ($2000) and premium paint ($450).

Standard Caliber features continue to include twin front and side curtain airbags, electronic stability/traction control, ABS brakes, brake assist, a leather-clad steering wheel with audio controls, air-conditioning with rear outlets, power windows, power/heated mirrors, cruise control, floor mats, a flat-folding front passenger seat, front/rear foglights, illuminated cup-holders and the ‘Uconnect Media Centre 230’ sound system comprising a six-CD/DVD/MP3 player with audio jack.
