Sirion is powered by a 989cc, three-cylinder, 12-valve engine that produces 41kW at 5200rpm and 88Nm at 3600rpm

Daihatsu claims the Sirion consumes just 5.2 litres of petrol per 100km on the highway and 6.0 litres in the city

A steel crankshaft and flexible flywheel equipped with a compression plate minimise engine vibration

The Sirion is said to offer more interior space and luggage capacity than the Toyota Starlet, despite being smaller in overall dimensions

14-inch steel wheels are shod with 165/65R14 tyres

Suspension is by independent MacPherson struts and coil springs at the front and a torsion beam axle with coil springs at the rear

The springs and shock absorbers are situated below the Sirion's floor level to offer a flat luggage area

Sirion is equipped with dual airbags to provide the driver and front-seat passenger with added protection in a frontal collision.

The central-locking system is equipped with an impact-sensing release system that automatically unlocks the doors and cuts off the fuel supply after a collision to allow for a safe, quick exit

The impact-sensing system also activates the hazard lights and interior lamp to warn other drivers and assist in the escape or rescue of passengers.

A five-speed manual transmission is standard while an optional four-speed automatic costs $1500.

Sirion has met and exceeded European 56km/h frontal and 50km/h side-on barrier collision regulations
