HOLDEN SB BARINA 3D HATCHBACK (1994-2001)
THE Spanish-built Barina Joy has space, looks and style. Its 1.4-litre engine only emits 44kW so it relies on good low-speed torque. Equipment includes power steering, seatbelt pretensioners and an optional driver's airbag. But it's a stodgy drive and not as reliable as its Suzuki-sourced predecessor.

FORD WB-F FESTIVA 3D HATCHBACK (1994-2000)
One of the least desirable cars of recent times, the South Korean-built (by Kia) Festiva only had economy and a nice dash going for it. Its below-par quality, safety, comfort, refinement, engine performance and handling should become apparent immediately. Awkward styling and a cheapo image don't help either.

NISSAN K11 MICRA 3D HATCHBACK (1995-1997)
THE British-built Micra is a great all-rounder, with sassy Euro styling inside and out, a spacious interior and excellent economy and performance from its 55kW 1.3 engine. Easy, safe handling and a comfy ride round out a critically underrated light car star. Rare parts availability is its only drawback.

HONDA CIVIC 3D HATCHBACK (1991-1995)
THE Breeze is the entry level Civic and its strong points are attractive styling, good roadholding from the double wishbone suspension and high quality. The 1.3-litre engine with 55kW delivers reasonable performance and average fuel economy. Equipment is on a par with this group of rivals.
