HYUNDAI SONATA 4D SEDAN (1993-1998)
THE Sonata offers value for money and interior space to match the Camry. Quality and road performance are only average. The 2.0-litre engine produces a strong 102kW while remaining economical but it lacks low speed power. The GLE comes with most creature comforts and a driver's airbag.

FORD KJ LASER 4D SEDAN (1994-1998)
THE imported Laser is one of the better looking medium-size cars. The twin cam, 1.8-litre engine produces a competitive 92kW and is near the top of the class for response and economy. Handling and ride are above class average but the LXi equipment list is short compared to the Espero, although it does have power steering.

TOYOTA CAMRY 4D SEDAN (1993-1997)
IF the Espero is not big enough, look at the Camry. Under the Camry's bland exterior is a competent car with almost full-size interior space. The 2.2-litre, twin cam, four-cylinder engine with 95kW is a good compromise between acceleration and fuel economy. The CSi equipment list includes power steering and central locking.

MAZDA 626 4D SEDAN (1992-1997)
THE Mazda's package of smart styling and quality earned it a joint car of the year award with its Ford Telstar sibling. The 2.0-litre twin-cam engine has a competitive 85kW. The 626 comes close to matching the Espero for equipment, while offering a much higher level of quality and driver satisfaction.
