HONDA ODYSSEY (1998-2000)
THE Odyssey was rated by some as the best people-mover on the market, offering seating for seven along with car-like dynamics. It is also more compact, which makes it easy to park and manoeuvre in traffic. Performance from the 2.2-litre engine is lively but it needs to be worked hard.

MAZDA MPV (1996-1999)
ALTHOUGH an older design than some of these rivals, the MPV can still hold its own. Its 3.0-litre V6 engine offers reasonable performance and handling, but the long gearing spoils the fun. Ride and handling are above average but it is not the biggest inside. Equipment levels are good.

TOYOTA TARAGO GLX (1990-2000)
WAS the top seller in this segment but its age shows against Voyager and Odyssey. Its looks have not dated but ride and handling are by no means class-leading. Equipment levels are average and the interior trim looks a bit cheap. The four-cylinder engine does a reasonable job.

MITSUBISHI STARWAGON (1994-2002)
THE Starwagon’s 2.4-litre, four-cylinder engine does a respectable job of hauling it around, although the dynamics fall into the average category. The ride in the back can be a bit choppy. Interior space is good but it is not as car-like to drive as the Voyager or Odyssey.
