BIG Chryslers are back in Australia and, if the 300C Hemi is any indication, we should be seeing more of the distinctive winged logo in the next few years. The 300C is a return to mega-size American cars, and a welcome one. There’s much of the bold, brassy glitz of the past, but now it’s underwritten by very competent road behaviour and high standards of quality. The electronics, safety and comfort of Euro prestige sedans are all built into the most spectacular big car we’ve seen in this country for years. The American badge of honour is the cast-iron, 5.7-litre pushrod Hemi V8 that blasts out 250kW yet, through an intriguing fuel cut-off system, can be coaxed to deliver exceptionally good fuel economy figures for a car of its size, power and weight. The clincher is the Hemi’s $60,000 price tag.
