Holden export boost

BY JAMES STANFORD | 7th May 2008

GM HOLDEN’S export program into the United States received a boost last week as General Motors decided to reduce full-size pick-up truck and SUV production “in line with market demand”.

GM has announced it will produce 88,000 fewer full-size pick-ups and 50,000 fewer full-size SUVs in 2008 as sales of the fuel-thirsty models slide.

The move could benefit the smaller Holden Ute-based Pontiac G8 sport truck, which goes on sale in the US late next year.

With less excess large pick-up stock in dealer yards waiting to be sold at a discount, the smaller and more fuel-efficient G8 ute should have a better chance of success.

Models included in the wind-back include the Chevrolet Silverado, Tahoe and Suburban, as well as the GMC Sierra Yukon.

GM said sales of full-size pick-ups and full-size SUV were down by 15 per cent and 26 per cent respectively during the first quarter of this year.

The company claims it is still the market leader in both segments, with a close to 40 per cent share of full-size trucks and more than 63 per cent share of full-size SUVs.
