Chevrolet Cruze – a symbol of change

BY RON HAMMERTON | 24th Jun 2015

GENERAL Motors has reached out to its Gen Y target market for its new-generation Chevrolet Cruze in the United States by releasing a teaser release spelled out entirely in emoji.

The fun statement published on the Chevrolet website and via social media invited car fans to translate it, creating a wave of pre-publicity for the all-new car to be revealed in Detroit by GM CEO Mary Barra tonight.

GM’s bread-and-butter brand has been actively pursuing a younger customer base in recent years, reducing the average Chevrolet buyer age to about 35 – the connected generation.

While some car fans and journalists had a crack at translating the emoji statement, sometimes with humorous results, GM later provided the official translation that managed to emphasise the car’s features that would most likely appeal to younger customers.

These included details of the connectivity, with seven connected devices with 4G Wi-Fi available and first-in-class Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Interestingly, the statement says the car will be available globally, but Holden has yet to say if it will be available in Australia to replace the current-generation model that will die when Holden’s Elizabeth factory closes in South Australia in 2017.

The alternative for Australia is the Opel-built Astra that shares the same new GM D2XX platform as the latest Cruze.

The new Cruze will be revealed in its sedan form in the US tonight, but a hatch version reportedly was shown to dealers at a Las Vegas meeting last week ahead of release at some point in the 2016 model year.
