YOU may not expect this, but BMW’s X-badged range of city-friendly soft-roaders accounted for about 40 per cent of the German luxury marque’s sales last year.

The US-made X5 was the first soft-roader built by BMW, and continues to be its strongest-selling for good reason.

Featuring fresh third-generation styling, more economical turbocharged drivetrains and – for the very first time – rear-wheel-drive entry-level versions, BMW has created a version of the X5 that it says raises the bar in every respect.

Apart from the slightly awkward looks – a matter of personal taste – BMW has achieved everything it set out to do.
