THE times are challenging for car-makers up in the land of the luxury SUV, with more competitors coming in at lower prices to really upset the status quo.

In this case, that means the top-selling BMW X5, the vehicle that not only transformed the class with its dynamics and refinement, but also has come to redefine it with over 37,000 units sold here since 2000.

Now there’s a new generation, with similar looks to keep the traditionalists happy, but with enough changes to lure those who may otherwise settle for something different.

Either way, the Bavarians are consolidating their lead.
