THE X5 comes only with BMW's Steptronic five-speed automatic transmission that allows a degree of manual override by slipping the lever to the left. In automatic mode, it has the ability to hold lower gears in situations where older-style autos would shift up, such as when braking or suddenly lifting off the accelerator. It also reads lateral forces to prevent unwanted upshifts when accelerating out of a corner. Its adaptive function also works well, changing its shift points to suit individuals' driving styles.
