WHEN BMW launched the X6 in 2008 it ruffled more than a few conservative feathers. Here was a large SUV based on the same platform as BMW’s popular X5, but it had coupe-like lines and an athletic stance.

It was a different look and until then no other car-maker had dared do something like this – even BMW had fairly low expectations for how it would sell.

But, much to everyone's surprise, it did sell well for what is a niche model. Since its launch almost 250,000 X6s have been sold.

Now BMW is hoping to repeat the trick, but this time with the smaller X4. Based on the same platform as the X3, the X4 has a similar coupe-like look to its bigger X6 sibling, but for a lot less dough.
