AT LAST BMW has a worthy, on-brand compact-SUV challenger to the super-successful Audi Q3, in the guise of the second-generation X1.

Based on the UKL platform also underpinning a range of other Bimmers (2 Series Active Tourer) as well as the latest range of Minis, this handsome crossover adopts the transverse front/all-wheel drive philosophy, greatly improving packaging over the patchy old version without impinging on driver enjoyment.

Some cracks do remain, however.
