BMW hopes the new entry level second-gen X1s woo some of the thousands of Australians who might otherwise choose a more mainstream-branded high-spec compact SUV like a Mazda CX-5 GT or Akera.

On the evidence of the sparkling sDrive (that’s BMW-speak for 2WD – or FWD in this instance) 18d and 20i, there’s every chance that the Bavarian’s dreams will come true.

There’s much to like and little that grates, although we’d definitely drop another $1K for the optional adaptive dampers if ride comfort is a priority.
