Alpina models offered Drexler LSD option

ALPINA models sold in Australia now have a mechanical limited-slip differential (LSD) exclusively produced by Drexler Motorsport available on the options list.

Functioning independently from Alpina's standard dynamic driving systems and settings, the mechanical LSD helps to increase traction during spirited driving and reduces slip by sending power and torque to the corner with the greatest grip.

The option, which is already available for Alpina models sold in Europe, has a 20 per cent take-up rate overseas and is expected to be even more successful in Australia’s performance enthusiast-filled market.

The dealer-fitted option can be applied to any BMW Alpina B3, B4 and B7 model post-delivery for $5,130 or ordered with any new vehicle.

Petrolheads often favour mechanical LSDs over more recent electronically-controlled versions and torque vectoring systems for their unique handling and traction characteristics.

Based in Germany, Drexler Motorsport primarily designs and manufactures limited-slip differentials for use in performance and motorsport vehicles.

The diff was created specifically for the Alpina range and is unique thanks to its reactive nature, easy controllability when pushing hard near the vehicle's limits, and impressive directional stability, says the car-maker.

Drexler hand-builds the hardware with forged gears and a CNC milled housing offering motor sport quality for performance thirsty owners.

With the support of BMW Group Australia, Alpina – the German brand's bespoke tuning house – launched locally in November 2016 with its first dealership location in Doncaster, Victoria.

Whilst figures for its first two months on sale are not public knowledge, the tuning brand has capped its allocation of Australian vehicles to 50 for the first year, to gauge interest for the brand and future offerings.
