Refreshed BMW 6 Series on sale in June

BY DANIEL GARDNER | 28th May 2015

BMW’S 6 Series will get extra gear, fettled suspension and a tweaked nose when the large sports coupe, convertible and Gran Coupe go on sale in June.

All variant prices rise by $925, except the sole diesel in the range – the 640d Gran Coupe – which goes up just $100.

For the extra cash, the German car-maker has boosted standard equipment for the entire seven-variant coupe, convertible and Gran Coupe range, although no mention is made of the high-performance M-powered trio at this stage.

Mechanically, the 640i and 640d and 650i are largely unchanged with a suspension retune and sports exhaust the only exceptions. BMW says the revised chassis has resulted in “sharpened handling”, while the new pipes offer a “more dramatic engine note”.

The 640i and 640d still produce the same power, with the 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder petrol developing 235kW and 450Nm and the 3.0-litre diesel straight six providing 230kW/630Nm.

In addition to the mild nose-job, the 640 gains adaptive LED headlights, digital radio, lane departure warning, forward collision warning with light city braking, parking radar with reverse camera and 360 degree view, and soft-closing doors, while convertibles now have a wind deflector.

Like the 640, the 650i powertrain is also unchanged, with the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol pumping out 330kW of power and 650Nm of torque via a range-wide eight-speed automatic transmission.

For the mid-life update, the top-performing (non-M variant) 6 Series gets the same updates as its smaller engined siblings with the addition of a wheel diameter boost to 20-inches.

The equipment boost and facelift is also accompanied by the arrival of four new Individual colour choices for no extra cost, with Citrin Black, Ruby Black, Moonstone and Tanzanite joining the existing range of flat and metallic colours.

BMW Group Australia head of product and market planning Sean Ticehurst said the updates would maintain the quality and performance that BMW customers expect.

“The BMW 6 Series is a strong representation of the premium motoring values which characterise our brand,” he said.

“The new BMW 6 Series provides the ultimate palette for tailored motoring, with the boost in specification providing for a broad array of individual paint and interior options.

“Technological advances and a refining of its already inspiring design meanwhile enable the new BMW 6 Series to remain at the forefront of its segment, setting the standard for performance and luxury.”BMW 6 Series pricing*
