WHEN it comes down to it, the 3 Series two-door burrows right down to the core of what BMW has been about over the last 40 years: engineering-led driving machines.

But while most of the base models (until relatively recently) left you wishing you studied harder at school to have been able to earn more money for the more powerful variants, the entry-level 420i Coupe that is the direct descendent of the first E21 318i is in an altogether parallel utopia as far as performance, refinement and comfort are concerned.

We’re totally smitten.
