Focus on luxury for special BMW 4 Series pair

UPDATED: 04/07/2017BMW Australia has enhanced its 420i Coupe and Gran Coupe models by adding special Luxury Edition versions that are priced identically from $74,900 driveaway.

Already available in local showrooms, the pair attract a $5000 premium over the before on-roads cost of the standard 420i with Luxury Line package that they are based on.

However, buyers are compensated for the extra cost with the addition of keyless entry/start, electric glass sunroof, metallic paint and heated front seats.

These items complement existing equipment levels, which include LED headlights and fog lights, anti-dazzle side mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive M suspension, 19-inch alloy wheels and an automatic tailgate (Gran Coupe only).

Inside, standard kit extends to an 8.8-inch infotainment system with iDrive6, ConnectedDrive services, satellite navigation with live traffic, digital radio, head-up display, electric front sports seats with memory function, Dakota leather upholstery and a six-speaker sound system.

Furthermore, 420i offers a suite of safety and driver assistance technologies, such as lane departure warning, speed limit recognition, reversing camera, 360-degree surround view, autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning and pedestrian detection.

Both body styles continue to employ the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, with outputs of 135kW/270Nm sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel consumption for both variants is rated at 5.8 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined cycle test, while carbon dioxide emissions were tested at 134 grams per km.

According to BMW Group Australia CEO Marc Werner, the two limited-run models further accentuate the strengths of the recently upgraded 4 Series range.

“The refined look and feel of the BMW 4 Series LCI (Life Cycle Impulse) has been taken a step further with the 420i Luxury Edition models,” he said.

“With even higher standard specification, the Luxury Editions highlight the 4 Series’ restrained blend of elegance and dynamic performance.”Last month, a mid-life update – or LCI in BMW language – for the 4 Series line-up arrived, with restyled front and rear bumpers the main visual points of difference, as well as new LED head- and tail-light graphics.

BMW currently owns second place in the local premium sportscar segment, with 786 combined examples of its 4 Series and 4 Series Gran Coupe finding homes to the end of May this year.

Comparatively, the Mercedes Benz C-Class Coupe and Cabriolet (1374) lead the sales race during the same period, while the Audi A5 and A5 Sportback (409), Lexus RC (172) and Infiniti Q60 (36) round out the top five.
