BMW's 3 Series remains one of the few compact sedans to retain a front-engined, rear-wheel drive layout, a formula that was once the standard for most vehicles. Also featuring a front-mounted, longitudinal, six-cylinder engine, it just so happens the basic 3 Series mechanical plan lends itself perfectly to a performance coupe application like the M3.
