BMW’s drift mob smokes city streets

A CAPE TOWN city roundabout was transformed into a drift track for a new video to promote BMW’s new 2 Series.

Five identical red M235i coupes – clearly with the traction control turned off – were unleashed in a series of tyre-smoking stunts around the roundabout at the hands of stunt drivers led by Kiwi Rhys Millen and drifting champion Samuel Hubinette of Sweden.

The filming was overseen by Hollywood stunt coordinators Mic Rodgers and Riley Harper whose credits include the The Fast and the Furious series, Iron Man and Batman: The Dark Knight Rises.Apart from drifting, the drivers executed a number of synchronised manoeuvres – including a display of high-speed parallel parking – in a precision display that BMW dubbed “formation dancing on tarmac”.

The streets of the South African city were blocked off for the filming, which is set to spawn another video on the behind-the-scenes preparation for the shoot and a driving tutorial by Millen.
