WHEN Audi introduced the driver-focused SQ5 mid-sized performance SUV in 2013, its recipe of hearty diesel grunt and frugal fuel consumption, combined with the same practicality of its Q5 donor car, made it an instant success.

The SQ5 is still selling strongly and constitutes about a quarter of all Q5 sales and now the German car-maker is planning to replicate its popularity with its third Audi Sport SUV, this time based on the larger Q7.

With a mighty 4.0-litre diesel V8, 900Nm of torque and an aesthetic makeover from the Audi Sport go-fast outfit, Audi is planning to capture customers who have been yearning for an SQ5 but have a few more children and things to cart around.
