Audi prices Q5 under $60K

BY MARTON PETTENDY | 2nd Feb 2009

AUDI Australia has set a sub-$60,000 price for not one but two variants of its upcoming Q5 compact SUV.

Full pricing for the four-member Q5 range was announced this morning, when Audi confirmed the 2.0 TDI turbo-diesel and 2.0 TFSI turbo-petrol versions would both carry recommended retail prices of $59,900.

While that doesn’t quite match the previously revealed starting price of Volvo’s forthcoming XC60, which will be launched in Australia next week with an entry-level price of $57,950 for the 2.4 D5 turbo-diesel, it undercuts the base price of its most direct rival, the $61,830 BMW X3 2.0d diesel.

The Q5 3.2 FSI, powered by a petrol V6, will be priced $10,000 higher at $69,900 (positioning it between the $69,157 X3 2.5i and the $74,877 X3 3.0i), while the flagship Q5 3.0 TDI turbo-diesel will cost $2000 more at $71,900 – more than $5000 less than the X3 3.0d diesel ($76,996).

All Australian Q5s will feature Audi’s quattro permanent all-wheel drive, as well as the first application of the Volkswagen luxury brand’s new seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission (dubbed S tronic).

The five-seater Q5 will join its larger Q7 seven-seat sibling on sale here in the second quarter, after its Australian debut at the 2009 Melbourne International Motor Show.

Audi said that its sub-7.0L/100km average fuel consumption figure made the Q5 2.0 TDI exempt from the federal government’s new “green” luxury car tax.

Audi Australia managing director Joerg Hofmann said the Q5 was priced very competitively and was an extremely attractive package.

“Both diesel engines and both petrol engines combine strong performance with good fuel economy – a hallmark of our brand. It also looks good and offers typically top quality fit, finish and safety equipment,” he said.

“The Q5 will undoubtedly give the Audi range a strong boost in 2009 – in image and also in sales. Our network is extremely positive about this addition to our range.”
