SHARING the tried and tested RS6 recipe of quattro all-wheel drive and twin-turbo V8 power, Audi’s RS7 offers almost all of the performance of its Avant (wagon) sibling but in a more sedan-like body.

That said - there is nothing conventional about the way the RS7 looks, and its styling nicely slots into the niche – but ever-growing – high-performance coupe-sedan segment alongside offerings from all the main German brands, plus a few others besides.

But with a zero to 100km/h of under four seconds Audi’s take on the high-end sedan-coupe is the fastest accelerating and most affordable in its class, priced from $238,500 before on-road costs.

Australia didn’t get the RS7 for an agonising 16 months after its official debut at the 2013 Detroit motor show, which meant by the time GoAuto got its hands on an example it had already been given a facelift.

With room for four plus luggage in autobahn-storming style, Audi’s exclusive RS badged Sportback has the ability to effortlessly transport you and three friends far in excess of Australian speed limits.

We spent some time with the RS7 to see if it is a mile-munching GT hunter, or a power house of potential that will always feel frustrated on Australian roads.
