AUDI has been consistently winning fans in the hot executive sedan segment since it introduced the A4-based S4 five generations ago, with customers flocking to the combination of potent performance wrapped up in typical A4 comfort and style.

But the German car-maker’s arch-rivals are not known for their tolerance of strong performers in niche segments with Mercedes, BMW and, more recently, Jaguar swinging swords in the competitive market for ever greater pieces of action.

Mercedes has recently weighed in with its AMG-lite C43, BMW offers its updated 340i while Jaguar joined the forced-induction 3.0-litre six-cylinder party with its XE S.

Audi says the 2017 S4 sedan and Avant takes big steps up in refinement, efficiency and performance, but can the popular model still hold its own in an increasingly crowded arena and after 20 years?
