A SIX-SPEED manual gearbox with synchromesh on all gears is the only transmission available on the RS4. The gear ratios are close, with third and fourth ratios reduced by seven per cent over the S4. The final drive ratio is 4.111:1. A hydraulically operated single dry-plate clutch with asbestos-free lining is used. Though there's no quattro in the title, RS4 does indeed use Audi's torque-sensing four-wheel drive system. All four wheels are driven permanently, with a Torsen self-locking centre differential between the front and rear axles enabling up to two thirds of the engine's power to be diverted to one axle or the other.
