AUDI first introduced a manic RS-bred version of its likeable A3 hatchback in 2011, but with a left-hand-drive layout only, Australia could only look on in envy.

In its next-generation however, the steering wheel was made available on the other side and Audi finally got the weapon it needed to fight arch rivals Mercedes and BMW in the Australian turbo hyper hatchback segment.

Packaged in Audi's popular A3 Sportback shell, the RS3 promises a tempting blend of everyday hatchback practicality with a mighty sting of performance courtesy of a turbocharged five-cylinder engine that feeds power – lots of power – to all four corners.

That recipe could cement the Audi RS3 as a compelling all-rounder for ferrying people and animal, as well as a brazen B-road blasts when you don't. Is it a try-hard exercise in overkill?
