Audi action on performance options

BY BRUCE NEWTON | 28th Sep 2001

AUDI is set to introduce a range of go-fast performance options for its A3, A6 and TT models when the first batch of 2002 model year cars arrives early next year.

After relative success with the S range of performance models - S3, S4, S6, S8 and RS4 - Audi's tuning arm, quattro GmbH, recently announced ex-factory sport packages for the A3 and A6, as well as an "S-line" package for the TT quattro coupe.

Two equipment versions are available for the A3 and A6 - the interior package and the suspension package.

The interior option includes a three-spoke sports steering wheel, new instrument cluster with light grey dials, sports seats featuring lumbar adjustment trimmed in "Speed" cloth with leather side sections and colour co-ordinated with the headlining and door trim panels, and a trip computer. Recaro sports seats are also available by special order.

The suspension option features lowered springs, stiffer dampers and on the A3, 17-inch alloy wheels with 225/45 ZR tyres. Two designs are offered, one of which was fitted to the previous generation A4 1.8T Quattro.

On the A6 the alloy wheels are also in two designs - a nine-spoke pattern from the RS4 or a cross-spoke arrangement - in 17 or 18-inch sizes.

The S-line concept, which has only been applied to the TT Quattro coupe at this stage, can be ordered in exclusive pearl effect colours - Misano Red and Avus Silver - and will feature a number of customised performance enhancements, including:A discrete S-line badge is located between the door and the rear wheel arch to distinguish it as a special kind of TT coupe.

The S-line name will filter down to other models in the Audi range in the future, together with individual visual refinements for specific models.

Also in the first quarter of 2002, the S3 hot hatch will receive a power boost when the existing 154kW engine is ditched in favour of the TT quattro's 165kW powerplant - no doubt part of Audi's philosophy to streamline engines across more than one model.
