Aston Martin to go all-electric by 2030

ASTON MARTIN has announced details of its Racing. Green. sustainability strategy, in which the Gaydon-based firm outlines its roadmap towards full electrification.

Overseen by a dedicated Board Sustainable Committee, the strategy further targets net-zero CO2 emissions manufacturing facilities by 2030 and net-zero CO2 emissions across the company’s entire supply chain by 2039.

The British marque also says it will commence deliveries of its first hybrid electric vehicle – the Valhalla supercar (pictured) – in 2024 and launch its first battery-electric vehicle a year later. The brand has committed to a “fully electrified Sport/GT and SUV portfolio by 2030”.

Launched on Earth Day, Aston Martin says Racing. Green. is aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals that reflect the company’s established approach to sustainability. Furthermore, the sports car and -SUV producer recently became a member of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) – a global body that enables businesses to set emissions reduction targets in line with climate science.

The 109-year-old company says its new targets build on its already commendable achievements of a 44 per cent reduction in emissions intensity in its UK operations between 2020 and 2021, as well as the fact that all of its British manufacturing facilities have used 100 per cent renewable energy since 2019.

The company also plans to install 14,000 solar panels on the roof of its Saint Athan site in Wales (the project is expected to supply 20 per cent of the plant’s annual energy needs) and says it has already successfully diverted 100 per cent of its waste from landfill, with a further target to eliminate all plastic packaging waste company-wide within three years.

The Racing. Green. strategy also targets the reduction of water consumption by 15 per cent with a renewed focus on the use of sustainable materials (including green aluminium alloy and vegan-friendly upholstery) to not only reduce its environmental impact, but to provide greater customer choice.

“Aston Martin is accelerating. We are transforming our business and believe that now is the time to challenge ourselves to make a bigger difference, to become a world-leading sustainable ultra-luxury business,” said Aston Martin Lagonda CEO Tobias Moers.

“Whilst embracing electrification, we believe our sustainability ambitions must be broader than just producing emissions-free vehicles and want to drive sustainability principles across our entire business, with a team representative of society proudly producing responsible products with a reduced environmental impact and making a positive contribution to the communities where we operate.

“Applying our passion for engineering and design innovation to this challenge, we are excited about shaping not just how quickly the world gets from zero to sixty, but how quickly we get to net-zero.”
