FACELIFTS hardly come less visible than the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Series 1 – an oddly titled makeover consisting of a model cull, upgraded multimedia and some very minor changes only obvious to trainspotters.

Also not so clear is the company’s stated mission to march upmarket with a car that worked best in its base guise in Australia – that version’s now been axed, leaving the volume-selling Distinctive TCT (auto) starting at a staggering $35,000, before on-roads.

We go beyond the surface to see if there’s more going on.
