ALFA Romeo has cut pricing on its 156 range by as much as $6460 on some models.

The entry 156 JTS manual and Selespeed models now get a $4960 price cut to bring them down to $44,990 while the Ti manual and Selespeed have received the biggest cut - $6460. They now start at $45,990 for the manual and $48,990 for the Selespeed.

The V6 six-speed manual has been dropped and replaced by an auto-only, using Alfa’s Q-system at $57,490.

The Sportswagon JTS and Selespeed are now $48,490 and $51,490, a saving of $5010.

General manager of Alfa Romeo Australia, David Stone, said the country’s ultra-competitive market had forced the company to "re-evaluate our pricing so we maintain our edge".

"We had to take a sharp pencil to the price list," he said.

The aggressive pricing strategy follows a rejig of 147 pricing when the facelifted model went on sale several months ago.
