IT’S not exactly pint-size, but the Alfa Romeo 147 GTA packs a lot into a small space. Quicker than a WRX, and quicker than Volvo’s new hotshot S60 R, it employs a muscular 3.2-litre V6 to do what others do with turbochargers. The benefits come in easy, flexible power, extreme smoothness and pretty respectable fuel economy. The price may seem a little steep for a car that belongs to Alfa Romeo’s entry level range, but the acceleration curve is steep too. Add to that outstanding handling and roadholding, an adequate if not outstanding equipment list and you have a cult car in the making. The GTA’s downside? Its turning circle is like that of a full-size four-wheel drive.
