New-gen Benz Sprinter to land in October

BY TUNG NGUYEN | 18th Sep 2018

MERCEDES-BENZ Vans Australia’s third-generation Sprinter will hit local showrooms in October in either single-cab chassis, dual-cab chassis or panel-van body styles with pricing kicking off at $41,238 before on-road costs.

Opening the range will be the new front-wheel-drive (FWD) manual 311CDI medium-wheelbase (MWB) single-cab chassis, which is powered by an 84kW 2.1-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine and features a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 3.55 tonnes.

Buyers of the single-cab chassis can also spec up to either 105kW or 120kW tunes of the same engine and a 4.10, 4.49 or 5.00t GVM.

Topping the single-cab chassis range is the 140kW/440Nm 3.0-litre six-cylinder oil burner, which is fitted with a seven-speed automatic as standard, and ranges in GVM from 4.10 to 5.00t, while pricing tops out at $65,718 in rear-wheel-drive (RWD) 519CDI long-wheelbase (LWB) guise.

Meanwhile, dual-cab chassis Sprinters are all exclusively RWD, with all 2.1-litre versions outputting 120kW paired to a six-speed manual and all six-pot variants producing 140kW mated to a seven-speed automatic.

Pricing of the dual-cab chassis kicks off at $56,552 for the manual 316CDI MWB with a 3.55t GVM and tops out $69,332 for the automatic 519CDI LWV with a 5.00t GVM.

Finally, the Sprinter panel vans start at $46,008 for the FWD manual 311CDI short-wheelbase (SWB) and extends to the $76,069 RWD automatic 519CDI LWB.

All front-drive Sprinter panel vans are only available in SWB or MWB guise, while RWD versions are offered in MWB, LWB and extra-long-wheelbase (ELWB).

Similar to the single-cab chassis range, the panel van’s 2.1-litre engine is available in three tunes in FWD and RWD formats, and is paired as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox.

The six-cylinder option is also available to panel van buyers, which pairs a seven-speed automatic with RWD only.

As previously reported, the front-wheel drivetrain is new to the Sprinter range, and increases payload by 50kg compared with the outgoing model, while also featuring an 80mm lower loading sill.

While all FWD versions come standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, a newly developed nine-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters can be optioned for an additional $2875.

Standard safety equipment on the new-generation Sprinter includes Active Brake Assist, crosswind assist, lane-keeping assist, attention assist, front airbags, blind-spot assist and reversing camera, however the latter two items do not apply to cab-chassis body styles.

Optional safety gear includes adaptive cruise control, active lane-keep assist and a surround-view monitor.

The brand’s new Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) – which debuted on the A-Class small hatch – is also fitted at no cost across the range, through a 7.0-inch high-definition touchscreen (or optional 10.25-inch head unit) that can also be controlled via steering wheel-mounted controls and voice commands.

As previously reported, the new-generation Sprinter also gains push-button start, more ergonomically designed seats, cupholders, driver display, cruise control and air-conditioning.

Options extend to loadable wheelarches, electrically adjustable seats, load compartment LED lighting strips and barn doors.

All new Sprinters come with Mercedes’ three-year/200,000km warranty with roadside assist, while some service intervals have increased to two years/40,000km.
