AUDI is not taking the threat of a resurgent Mini lying down, thanks to a couple of heart transplants and significantly better value propositions, keeping the A1 Sportback in the race.

While the upper-end scores the related Volkswagen Polo GTI’s larger 1.8-litre donk, it is the downsized three-cylinder turbos at the bottom of the range that are the most compelling.

But wrinkles are beginning to show as well.
