AN SUV without 4WD? A rare thing in Australia, if not on world markets where it’s possible to see front-wheel drive Toyota RAV4s and Honda CR-Vs running around with cheerfully unaware, or uncaring owners. In recent history, only Daihatsu (Terios), and (Ford) Territory, have so far dared to offer a two-wheel drive SUV in Australia. Now Hyundai, with the front-drive Tucson City, has decided to gauge how seriously local buyers are committed to the idea of 4WD SUVs. To all appearances another version of the neat little Korean SUV without the twin tailpipes and AWD badges, the Tucson City presents the proposition that maybe SUV owners don’t really care about AWD at all. In practice, there are a couple of things about the new Hyundai that remind buyers they belong to a different school of SUVs. For one, they lose not just AWD, but also the V6 engine. Second, because the City is lighter and mechanically less complex, they can expect to cover quite a few kilometres more for every litre of fuel.
