HOLDEN Special Vehicles had a crack at building a 7.0-litre (427 cubic-inch) V8-engined model in 2002 with the HRT 427. That car never got off the ground as a road-going vehicle, but did succeed in winning the 2002 and 2003 Bathurst 24 Hour races and giving Peter Brock his last major race victory. However, the idea never went away and when then-chairman of GM Holden Denny Mooney suggested to HSV owner Tom Walkinshaw a couple of years ago that he could get supplies of the 375kW (500 horsepower) LS7 engine from the US and that it would make for a special 20th anniversary model, the wheels started moving quickly. The result is the W427, a limited-edition model that is largely hand-built and priced at some $155,500 – the most expensive Holden or HSV model ever built.
