Jet Charge passes 10K installation milestone

EV recharging infrastructure provider Jet Charge passes 10,000 home installation mark

2 May 2024

CHARGING infrastructure provider Jet Charge has become the first Australian company to install 10,000 electric vehicle rechargers into residential homes country-wide.

Jet Charge has been in the game for over a decade after co-founders Tim Washington and Ellen Liang kicked off the business working from a garage in a Melbourne suburb, installing home chargers for the first Teslas that arrived in Australia.

The company is behind many of the home charger installations included with the purchase price of several battery electric vehicle (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models sold in Australia, with more privately commissioned by people who have availed themselves of a home charging appliance.

Its logo can also be found on public charging infrastructure where Jet Charge has been responsible for installation and maintenance of the equipment.

“In 2014, Teslas were such a rarity that drivers used to flash their headlights when they drove past each other,” said Ms Liang, whose Jet Charge job title is head of legal and corporate affairs.

“We were ambitious back then but I don’t think even we could have predicted 10,000 installations when we were working out of our garage,” she added.

Jet Charge hopes to capitalise on the fast uptake of BEV and PHEVs in Australia by convincing owners to opt for a home charging system.

“Our home-installed chargers are three to four times faster at charging a vehicle compared to a wall socket charging cable,” said Mr Washington, who is CEO of Jet Charge.

“They also allow you to reduce costs by scheduling your charging during off-peak hours outlined by your electricity provider or by integrating with your home’s solar system.”

The latter is dependent on daytime recharging or optional battery storage incorporated within the solar installation.

Jet Charge says it works closely with an extensive network of certified electricians to make sure all home installations and maintenance services are professional, high-quality and safe.

“The cars often get all the limelight, but it’s just as important to get the infrastructure right and to make sure it's reliable, fit for purpose and a joy to use,” said Mr Washington.

“So it isn’t just the 10,000 installations I’m proud of – it’s 10,000 best-in-class installations that we know are helping our customers power their visions for a low-emissions future.”

According to its FY23 Environmental Impact Report, Jet Charge’s charging solutions enable an average emissions reduction of 779 kg CO2e per residential installation, per year.

“We’ve installed more than 10,000 EV chargers over the last decade, and given the accelerating adoption rates of EVs here, we are expecting exponential growth for Jet Charge in the upcoming years.

Jet Charge provides charging solutions to businesses of all sizes, local councils and governments as well as to private homes.

The company is rolling out a charging-as-a-service business model called Charge+ that it says offers affordable and accessible charging solutions for BEV and PHEV fleets across offices, commercial sites and employee homes.

It means companies can fully outsource their installations, charging products and maintenance services in a single bundled monthly payment, assisting EV fleet management.

Jet Charge recently partnered with freight company Team Global Express to pioneer an Australian-first electric vehicle depot of the future providing innovative charging solutions for the country’s largest fleet of electric delivery vehicles.
