Volvo S90

S90

1 Oct 2016

Volvo S90 effectively replaced the S80 as the mid-to-large size sedan contender in its line-up but the two cars could not have been more different.

The S90 was based on the SPA large-car architecture that also underpinned the XC90 SUV and it featured sophisticated safety technology, fuel-efficient engines and a unique interior and exterior design to help it stand out against the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, Jaguar XF and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

Four powertrains were on offer from launch – two petro and two diesel – all from Volvo’s new Drive-E family, while a plug-in hybrid T8 variant was set to lob in 2017.

Fuel use ranged from 4.1 litres per 100km in base D4 diesel guise to 7.2L/100km in the high-spec T6 turbo-petrol variant.

Standard safety equipment included adaptive cruise control with the company’s semi-autonomous Pilot Assist system, a lane keeping aid, park assist and the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS).
