A larger, roomier but heavier new body over the same 1.2-litre 3K mechanicals meant that the Corolla began its decline into small-car mediocrity just as Honda showed the way of the future with the Civic.

Once again there was a very pretty coupe (KE35 Hardtop from early ’71).

The four-door wagon took until 1973 to arrive, just as a range-wide facelift, the demise of the base Corolla sedan for the SE and the introduction of a panel van variant occurred.

Total production for this second generation Corolla was 3,212,877 units.
