What a quantum leap forward! The renamed, revitalised and revved-up replacement for the 626 features sexy styling, satisfying performance, sharp dynamics and great value for money.

The front-wheel drive GG-series Mazda6 comes as either a sedan or hatch, or as the GY-series wagon - with all versions powered by a new 122kW/207Nm 2.3-litre DOHC 16V four-cylinder engine that delivers smooth, very economical performance.

Gearbox options are limited to a Tiptronic-style four-speed automatic or five-speed manual.

The car is also roomier, safer in a crash and offers decent loading facilities - especially in hatchback versions.

Standard features include dual airbags, anti-lock brakes, air-conditioning, keyless entry, power steering/mirrors/windows, a CD player and – from January 2004 – side and window airbags.

A true star performer, the Mazda6 put its once beleaguered builder back onto the road to recovery.
