In fact the second-generation LS 400 resulted in a virtually all-new car. Toyota said it was 92 per cent different by weight.

Although the dimensions remained the same, the rebodied LS’ wheelbase grew 35mm to 2850mm for 70mm more rear legroom height dropped 5mm yet headroom improved 5mm while the overall kerb weight fell by around 100kg.

The cabin was completely redesigned, featuring better ergonomics and the same stratospheric levels of build quality. Side airbags and traction control were also included.

Underneath there were revisions to the double wishbone suspension for tauter handling and less body roll the 4.0-litre V8’s outputs rose to 194kW and 365Nm. The gearbox remained a four-speed automatic.
