A complete redesign, the Mk2 Coupe (also called Tiburon in other markets) was based on the bigger, stronger, second generation Lantra small car platform, rather than the smaller Excel, and was a better car for it.

Hyundai claimed Porsche helped develop the suspension, which may have explained the car’s impressive handling abilities.

With no straight lines to speak of inside or out, the RD series represents the zenith of South Korean organic design expression.

Three models made up the Coupe range – the 94kW 1.8L SX and 102kW FX and SFX.

The latter’s ensemble included a driver’s airbag, anti-lock brakes, cruise control and leather upholstery.

A five-speed manual or four-speed automatic were available.

With keen prices, fine dynamics, a gutsy 2.0L engine option and generous equipment levels, buyers responded surprisingly enthusiastically to the Coupe range, until …
