Holden Commodore

VN Commodore Berlina

Holden logo1 Aug 1988

The second-generation V-car was a complete redesign inside and out.

Touted as “Big New Commodore V6,” it finally brought size parity with the hitherto high-flying Falcon, although the previous narrow track was retained in the VN.

A new-to-Australia US-made engine (a coarse 125kW 3.8-litre OHV V6) stood in for the ultimately too expensive Nissan 3.0 OHC in-line 'six'. The four-speed auto and five-speed manual gearboxes were also American.

An engine upgrade to a 127kW V6 occurred from November 1990.

New standard features: Air-con, cruise control, central locking, power mirrors, rear centre boot/ski hatch.

Engine options: 165kW 5.0-litre V8 optional from March 1989.
