KF Laser

Laser’s decline began with the American-designed, Mazda-engineered CT20 KF series, which proved too expensive and too close to its Telstar sibling.

Despite the ungainly styling, big strides in space, strength, refinement, performance and driveability were achieved.

Base L, GL engine models featured the 64kW 1.6L motor, while a new 76kW 1.8 single-cam EFI became available on the S and Ghia hatchback and sedan models. The larger engine was available with a 4-speed auto.

A sizzling 92kW twin-cam 1.8 powered the regular 3-door TX3, and was then joined in August 1990 by a storming 117kW turbocharged 4WD variant.

The old CT18-based KE Laser wagon continued on concurrently until December ’94.
