By 1988 BMW dropped its ETA engine cars and introduced the 125kW 325i, to much acclaim.
It represented the only E30 facelift, which brought with it revised suspension, interior trim, grille, bumpers, tail-lights and wheels.
The range now also included BMW’s first full in-house 3 Series convertible, the 92kW 2.0L 6-cylinder 320i.
That engine lasted as the base motor until the completely re-engineered 318i reappeared, sporting the new 83kW 1.8L M40 “4.” A 100kW 16-valve version called the 318iS also arrived.
